How to Play the Pinata Party Game

IMPORTANT NOTE: ADULT SUPERVISION is required at all times! (Come on, this is a game where you spin a child 'til they're dizzy and give them a stick to swing at a moving target.)

In Mexican culture, pinatas are common place at most children birthday parties. Infact, the pinata is regarded as the hightlight of the of the party. In South Texas (where we're located), the party itself is often refered to as "La Pinata." The following are directions for playing the pinata game.

Whether you are hosting an adult or kids party, the pinata party game is always considered to be the highlight of the party. Traditionally, the pinata game is played as an outdoor party game. The host should prepare little "grap bags" with some of the same treats that are in the pinata for the smaller kids to make certain that all the children get candy after the game is finished.

    1. You will need the following items to play the pinata game;
        • a rope
        • a place to hang the pinata (such as a tree branch, a basketball hoop, a close line a pinata hanging in middle, etc.)
        • fill the pinata with pinata candy and/or toy stuffers (can include large confetti)
        • a pinata stick or palo
        • and a bandana or blindfold for the participants.

    2. Fill the pinata prior to your guests arrival and place it somewhere so that your guests can admire. We suggest snapping a few photos of your pinata with the guest of honor as well as with your party guests.

    3. Hang your Pinata. Make sure that the pinata is hung over something that allows the rope to be pulled so that the pinata can be moved up and down.

    4. Line up your guests, starting with the smallest to the largest. Typically, smaller chilren are not blindfolded. Usually children over 4 years old are blindfolded, then spun around a few times (usually, once for each year of their life).

    5. Now it's time to play the party game. First, make sure all guests are at least 20 feet away from the child swinging. Also, make sure eveyone understands that no one should approach the pinata while the game is in play. That is, the pinata hitter must stop swinging before the children scamble to get the treats coming from the busted pinata.

    6. The dizzy participant is encouraged to hit the pinata by the other guests (usually telling them to hit high when the pinata is down or lower when the pinata is up. Each child should be allowed to hit the pinata a few times before their turn is up.

We can't stress enough how important it is to keep everyone safe recommend clearly stating some guidelines before starting the game.

REMEMBER! Before the last person has had their turn to swing at the pinata it will pretty much be beat to a pulp. Don't forget to snapped plenty of pictures-- and don't forget the video camera (and dont forget to send us your digital pictures so we can share them in our Photo Gallery.
