La PosadaPosadas are major Christmas celebrations in Mexico. They take place 9 days before Dec 24. and represent the re-enactment of St. Joseph and Virgin Mary's journey to Bethlehem. For the Posada, family, friends, and neighbors divide themselves into two groups Peregrinos (pilgrims) and innkeepers. The Peregrinos (pilgrims) will walk to three different houses holding white candles and singing Posada songs that ask for shelter. The peregrinos are refused at each shelter until they finally reach the third "inn" where they are welcomed to stay. This is the house that will host the Posada for the evening. Once in the lodge, it is time for the Peregrinos to pray around the Nativity scene (set without the baby Jesus). When the prayers are done, it's time for the children to have fun. A star shaped Pinata representing the star of Bethlehem is filled with, fruits, sugar canes, shelled peanuts, candy and sometimes coins. The children try to break the Pinata with blindfolds and a stick while everyone sings. On the eve of Dec. 24, many Catholic families and friends attend a mass called "Misa de Gallos" (Midnight Mass or Early Bird Mass). This mass is a celebration of the birth of Jesus. At this time, that nativity scene will have the addition of the baby Jesus to the set. Some churches may even create a live nativity scene, dressing boys, girls, men and women as the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and the three wise men. |
